Prof. Joël Ferri and Prof. Andreas Neff — former presidents of the European Society of Temporomandibular Joint Surgeons (ESTMJS) and leading voices for TMJ surgical standards in Europe — have formally joined IATMJ as Founding Members.

IATMJ is proud to welcome Professor Joël Ferri, MD, PhD and Professor Andreas Neff, DMD, MD as Founding Members. Both are former presidents of the European Society of Temporomandibular Joint Surgeons (ESTMJS) — the organisation founded in Rome in 2009 that established the European standard for evidence-based TMJ surgical practice. Their decision to join IATMJ at its inception brings the full weight of European TMJ surgical leadership into a genuinely global framework.
Prof. Joël Ferri — Orthognathic Surgeon and ESTMJS President
Chairman and Head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Lille University Medical School (CHU de Lille), Prof. Ferri has built one of France’s foremost academic centres in craniomaxillofacial surgery, with a career spanning orthognathic surgery, TMJ reconstruction, bone surgery, and preprosthetic surgery. A graduate of Nantes University and holder of a PhD completed in 1996, he was appointed Professor at Lille in 1997, and has served as President of the International Bone Research Association (2004–2008) and the French Society of Stomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery (2011). As ESTMJS President, he hosted the landmark 2017 ASTMJS–ESTMJS Joint Meeting in Lille — the defining transatlantic gathering that cemented the partnership between the North American and European TMJ surgical communities. He has published extensively in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, and is editor of the reference volume Preprosthetic and Maxillofacial Surgery: Biomaterials, Bone Grafting and Tissue Engineering.
Prof. Andreas Neff — Guideline Architect and ESTMJS President
Professor at the Department of Oral and Craniomaxillofacial Surgery, University Hospital of Giessen and Marburg (UKGM), Philipps University of Marburg, Germany, Prof. Neff is among Europe’s most prolific clinical researchers in TMJ surgery, with over 400 scientific publications. A Fellow of the European Board of Oro-Maxillofacial Surgery (FEBOMFS) with additional qualifications in facial plastic surgery, implantology, pain therapy, and sleep medicine, he served as ESTMJS President from 2017 to 2019 and thereafter as Board Advisor. His influence on the regulatory and educational architecture of European TMJ surgery is unmatched: he coordinated the ESTMJS Evidence-Based Guideline on Condylar Dislocation and authored the landmark Level S3 AWMF German Guidelines for TMJ Surgery — the highest evidence standard in German clinical medicine. He simultaneously leads the TMJ surgery section of the Strasbourg Osteosynthesis Research Group (SORG) and directs the German Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
From ESTMJS to IATMJ
The ESTMJS, founded in 2009, has been the institutional home of European TMJ surgical excellence for fifteen years. Professors Ferri and Neff did not merely participate in that tradition — they presided over it and codified it into clinical guidelines adopted across the continent. Their Founding Membership in IATMJ represents a direct transfer of European TMJ surgical leadership into an international association that spans surgery, orthodontics, prosthodontics, imaging, and rehabilitation. IATMJ is honoured to unite their expertise with the global TMJ community.
